Apparently some Missouri fans think it’s OK to make T-shirts that glorify a band of murderous racists.

Their cause was slavery. Their enemies were abolitionists. They took the lives of many without regret and wanted to keep freedom away from men like Gus Rigdel, who in 1950 was Missouri’s first black student, and Norris Stevenson, who in 1957 was Missouri’s first black football player.

If Quantrill’s politics had prevailed, these two would have been in shackles instead of earning college degrees. The same goes for every black student at Missouri today, especially those who are NCAA student athletes. Can fans cheer them on by celebrating Missouri’s racist history?

Darrell Arthur may be getting close . . . or he may wait until Spring. Distance from home doesn’t matter . . . or he’ll never leave Texas. IU and KU are working hard and leading the pack . . . or he is still wide open wtih Texas, Baylor and SMU in the mix. No one seems to know what will happen - with LOI day (actually it’s a week) looming.

Make no mistake about it - DARRELL, WE WANT YOU!

We are, however, pursuing Davon Jefferson, an amazing 2006 PF prospect. He’s the #4 rated PF in the 2006 class (Arthur is #2). Originally a UNLV commit, he plays for Chris Chaney at The Patterson School this year. Chaney is an excellent coach with a track record of developing talented players.

So what do you think, KU faithful. If Arthur doesn’t commit to KU during the early signing period, what should we do?

A) Hold the scholarship and wait for Arthur. He’s worth it! If he eventually goes elsewhere, we can use the scholarship in 2007.

B) Offer the scholarship to Davon Jefferson.

C) Offer the scholarship to Kansas product Tyrel Reed (see discussion below).

D) Offer the scholarship to another prospect (you don’t have to give the specifics in your comment, but it might spark some fun discussion)

E) Hold the scholarship for the DEEP 2007 class (again, you don’t have to tell us who you think we should target in 2007, but it might lead to some fun chats)

On another topic, how about Kansas 2007 prospect Tyrel Reed? Is this kid amazing or what? He has gone from relative obscurity to prominence in just a few months. He plays for KC Pump-N-Run and is now rated as the #15 PG prospect in America by Scout.com. He goes to high school in Burlington, Kansas, which is not exactly a basketball mecca or powerhouse. Nevertheless, schools like KU, UNC, and Stanford have all watched him work out. There are lots of other schools showing interest. He’s tall for his position at 6′3″, having grown more than an inch in the past year. Reed has atended several KU games, was one of the recruits at Late Night this year, and was spotted playing pickup games with KU players over the summer. If you’ve seen Reed play, we’d like to read your impressions.

Ranking the Big 12: The best place to watch a game

The Big 12 Conference is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and like every large organization, it demands an award show.

Ever since the old Big 8 merged with four teams from the Southwest Conference to create the Big 12, fans have seen everything from a national championship in football to a major NCAA scandal in men’s basketball.

We could look back at these highlights and rank them, but anyone can look in a record book and find out which teams won what games. We college students need something we can use.

In an attempt to both honor the Big 12 and give readers something tangible, I have taken it upon myself to rank the best places to watch a game in the conference, excluding Kansas.

After traveling to Boulder, Colo., last Saturday, I have finally watched a football or men’s basketball game at every campus in the Big 12.

I’ve seen games from the stands as a fan, covered games from the press box as a member of the media and joined in on local night scenes as a college student. After seeing everything these Big 12 cities and colleges have to offer, here’s where they rank.

1. Texas A&M

The school’s fight song begins with the words, “Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck

Most politicians blow smoke. I suspect that if they acted like Rick Perry talks here in his UT-OU prediction, a lot more would get done out there in Warshinton.

“There is no way the Sooners are going to be able to stop the Longhorn stampede — especially since their defensive line plays on roller skates,” he said. “I say Texas is going to shellack Oklahoma 41-10, and that’s being charitable.”

My predictions: Texas will win this weekend at the Red River Shootout. At some point, they won’t be able to call it a shootout anymore because people were killed in shootouts. It will be called instead something like the “Red River Roundup” or the “Red River Social”.

Oh, here’s the info on Adrian Peterson, sadly no relation to the everpresent “George Peetahhson” from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

“It’s better than it was (Sunday). It’s improved,” Stoops said. “They’re probably going to take that boot off (today). He’ll probably be ready to go, hopefully by Wednesday.”
