Eric Bossi reports today that Cole Aldrich, KU's main 2007 recruiting target, has narrowed his list to three schools: KU, Minnesota, and UNC. Aldrich is a 6-10 center with room to grow into a legit 7-footer. He already sports a ready 230 pound frame. Aldrich is rated the number 4 player overall in the 2007 class, and the number 1 2007 center prospect, by Scout.com. I doubt that Minnesota is really a player in the Aldrich recruitment war. I think this kid feels great pressure to keep his state school on the list, but this has been a two-horse race since Carolina became involved earlier this year.
Aldrich's recruitment by KU started when he was in 7th grade (i.e. under Roy Williams), so you might think that UNC has been there all along. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, UNC was surprisingly out of contact for more than a year before they extended an offer in May. Of course, Carolina can get involved late and still be a big factor in recruiting, but KU looks good to land this blue chipper. If Spencer Hawes goes to UNC, that will also help KU's chances.
Aldrich has been on KU's campus several times, including a visit to Midnight Madness. Aldrich has said in the past how impressed he was with the Jayhawk fans and the atmosphere at Midnight Madness. I'd like to see him in Lawrence for it again this year. He will visit UNC, and I want him to make that trip before basketball season starts! Aldrich probably won't commit until next Spring at the earliest.
Make no mistake, both KU and UNC will go to war for Aldrich, who as a sophomore was rated as the number one overall prospect at the Nike Hoop Jamboree (that's tops among all players, all grades, all positions). I sure hope that KU comes out on top!
