KU Women Have Good 2006 Recruiting Class

Bonnie Henrickson and the KU Women's Hoops team scored by collecting 7 LOI's ths week. On paper, it looks like a terriffic class, all high school students: Lindsay Ballweg - Overland Park, Kansas - 5-10 G LaChelda Jacobs - Mansfield, Texas - 5-10 G Kelly Kohn - Adrian, Michigan - 5-9 G Danielle McCray - Olathe, Kansas - 6-0 F Sade Morris - Norman, Oklahoma - 6-0 Wing Porscha Waddington - Temple, Texas - 6-1 F Rebecca Feickert - Goodrich, North Dakota - 6-2 F/C

This class is headlined by Danielle McCray, rated as the #30 overall prospect in America by All-Star Girls Reports. She was the first to commit to the Jayhawks, and according to Coach Henrickson, the rest of the class came together after that. Coach Henrickson was quoted in The Hutchinson News, "We found that once we got the commitment from Danielle and her family, the kids started to recruit each other. . . Once they were able to meet, they communicated with each other . . ."

We have already chronicled on PhogBlog the commitment of Kelly Kohn (see post dated 11/3/05 - or search for Kohn at the top of the PB page). Kelly is a scorer, averaging 21.2 points per game through three years of high school ball (Yes! That includes her freshman year). She consistently fills up the stat line in every category, however, and is a well-rounded player.

Ballweg is considered one of the top prospects in Kansas this year. She averages over 19 points per game for St. Thomas Acquinas, which has a 46-4 record with Ballweg on the court, including a Class 6A state championship.

Morris is also, according to The Hutchinson News, one of the top 30 players in the nation at her position. She is coached by former Kansas State women's coach Matilda Mossman. This is a nice pickup for Henrickson.

The women will have terriffic depth in the backcourt, and they have added height and athleticism throughout the roster.

Jacobs is considered one of the top Texas 2006 prospects whose school finished last season with a 33-6 record. Weddington is also one of the top Texas 2006 prospects. Feickert, who last year played in South Dakota, averaged 22 points, 16 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists, and 2 steals per game. That's a great stat line.

This will be a fun class to watch starting next year. We need to get behind our developing women's program and support the team. Improvement doesn't begin to describe what's happening and will continue to happen as this class comes in. Good job, Coach Henrickson!
