Bonnie Henrickson, coach of the KU Women Hoopsters, suspended Erica Hallman indefinitely until she gets her academics in order. Hallman, a senior starter who averaged around 35 mintues per game last year, was in street clothes for the 'Hawks home opener against Binghamton. The Kansas City Star did a nice article about it:
"It's just a statement," Henrickson said. "The most important thing for these young women here is to graduate. There's a commitment to get your degree and decisions you have to make to do that. And she hasn't been meeting her end of that. She has some responsibilities to fulfill. She's the one who put herself off the team. And she's the one - with good decisions - who will get herself back on.
"(The suspension) will be day-to-day. She's got a number of things due at noon (today). And she has no wiggle room. She's better than that. She's capable."
Senior Kaylee Brown, junior Shaquina Mosley and freshman Ivana Catic started at guard, a formidable lineup. The 'Hawks took over this one early, leading 48-22 at the half over Binghamton. The three starting guards scored 35 of those first-half points! Depth at the guard spot is obviously a plus for this team. Nevertheless, Binghamtom was clearly overmatched.
Coach Henrickson, I applaud your decision.
